Takashi Iizuka, head of Sonic Team, has been wondering why the studio has yet to make a Sonic RPG, despite the fact that he's been working on Sonic the Hedgehog games for the past thirty years. BioWare managed it with RPG Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood, released for the Nintendo DS in 2008, but to date, Sonic Team hasn't.
"Personally, I really like role-playing games," Iizuka told Good Vibes Gaming. "The RPG game format is a lot of fun and I've even thought to myself you know, for the past 30 years we haven't done a Sonic RPG. And I'm questioning myself. Why haven't we done a Sonic RPG in all this time? How have we gotten to 30 years with no RPGs?!"
Iizuka has been in charge of Sonic Team since 2008, and the developer has ample RPG experience, having released Phantasy Star Universe back in 2000. There's no reason why Sonic Team can't rustle up a Sonic RPG, beyond SEGA not giving it the greenlight. "So I'd like to hopefully work on a Sonic RPG at some point before I retire from SEGA,” Iizuka added.
“But you know, that's just a dream right now. There are no concrete plans at this point.," he continued, pouring cold water on any imminent surprise Sonic RPG announcements. Still, at the very least, a Sonic Chronicles remaster/remake might be cool, if we can't get an all-new Sonic the Hedgehog RPG. Just a thought.
